Cautious Approach to Retail Stablecoin Access
Anchorpoint, the stablecoin venture backed by Standard Chartered, has signalled it will not rush its Hong Kong dollar-denominated token to retail customers. CEO Dominic Maffei declined to reaffirm a previously suggested end-of-2026 retail launch window during a press conference held on Friday, instead emphasising a long-term, sustainable build-out of the market.
"We are convinced that developing the market in a durable and sustainable way is the right path," Maffei stated, dismissing the notion of accelerating a launch. "It simply does not make sense to rush."
The company had already brought its institutional-grade stablecoin product to market in August and had earlier indicated that a retail offering could follow as soon as the close of 2026. However, Maffei's remarks on Friday made clear that no firm date would be committed to at this stage.
HSBC's RedCoin Adds Competitive Urgency
The measured tone from Anchorpoint arrives at a moment of heightened competitive activity in Hong Kong's stablecoin landscape. On the same Friday, HSBC rolled out RedCoin, a Hong Kong dollar-backed stablecoin, to the 3.3 million registered users of its PayMe mobile payment app.
For Anchorpoint and its institutional backers, the HSBC move underscores the speed at which major financial institutions are converting stablecoin concepts into consumer-facing products. While Anchorpoint has opted for a phased rollout beginning with institutional clients, the rapid consumer deployment by a direct competitor raises the stakes around timing and market share.
Partnership Structure and Web3 Ambitions
Anchorpoint was formally established through a collaboration between Standard Chartered, blockchain company Animoca Brands, and telecommunications provider HKT. The partnership was announced in February 2025, building on the trio's joint participation in Hong Kong's stablecoin issuer regulatory sandbox, which took place in July 2024.
Within the venture, Animoca Brands is tasked with contributing its blockchain technology expertise and broad industry network, carrying a specific mandate to develop stablecoin use cases across the wider Web3 ecosystem. HKT brings its telecommunications infrastructure, while Standard Chartered provides the banking and regulatory backbone for the token.
The company's decision to prioritise institutional adoption before retail access reflects a strategy common among bank-backed stablecoin projects: establishing regulatory compliance, liquidity depth, and institutional trust before exposing the product to a broader consumer audience.
